how to modify powerpoint templates

How to modify PowerPoint templates using Masters

OK, so you've found the perfect PowerPoint templates (right here on our site, we hope), and you want to work faster when you create presentations. Maybe you've been using PowerPoint for a long time without ever using Masters. With this feature you can save time by adding or changing elements once instead of on every slide.

For more information, see how to create custom templates using alternate slide masters.

What is a Template Master?

Well, masters (and they always come in pairs) determine many of the settings for every slide in your presentation. They hold information about the background image, the fonts, color scheme and more.  For example, if you want to include your company logo on every slide - the place to do that most efficiently is in the Masters.

PowerPoint Master View

Let's open a new blank presentation and see how you can make some global changes using Master View.  Start with a blank presentation and apply a design template.  Now we're ready to modify.

To get into PowerPoint's Master View, choose View/Master/Slide Master.

Now you'll see a pair of thumbnails on the left side of your screen. Note that they are connected by a line (remember that "pair" thing?) and one of them is highlighted (surrounded by a box).  There's one master for the text slides and one for your title slide.
Selecting either will bring up that slide master to edit in the main (center) section of your workspace.  (Hold your cursor over the thumbnail if you aren’t sure which thumbnail is which)

Let’s Add a Logo

Select the slide master and choose Insert/Picture/From File.  A palette will pop up so you to navigate to the location where you have stored your logo.  (Note:  We chose a .PNG because the background is transparent...a .GIF cam be tramsparent too. Other formats like .JPG will have a background color and will not blend seamlessly with your background design.)

Choose the image you want, click Insert and put the image where you want to see it on your slide.

PowerPoint Normal View

Now, return to PowerPoint's Normal view, and you will see your logo on your text slide. Insert a new slide and voila! your logo will be on that slide, too. This logo will appear on every text slide you create.

Use PowerPoint slide masters to save time whenever you want to modify the entire presentation. Anything you can edit on a slide can be changed in Master View.

More than a Template.
A PowerPoint template isn’t limited to the background designs for our presentations.
A template file can also hold other presentation style elements, including specifications for bullets and fonts, placeholder sizes and positions, and color schemes. All templates from PowerFinish include all of these style elements along with the backgrounds.

  presentation tipTIP
I always work on the slide master first since PowerPoint automatically sends some of the changes made there to the title master.

Look at the title font on your template masters.  Probably they are both bold and not set for italic.  If I select the slide master and change the title font to italic, PowerPoint will automatically make the same font change in the title master.
